Summer Services

SUMMER SERVICES 2009 at 9:30 a.m.

Come and join in the fun of our less formal and creative summer services conducted by members and friends of our church.

Summer services begin at 9:30am (to take advantage of the cool of the early morning) and are about an hour.

Cookies and juice in social hall after.

Please note no service on Aug 9.

July 12 – " What Takes Us Deep " with Tom Goodwillie and Tesi Kohlenberg

Tom and Tesi will lead a sharing of what brings us into contact with the Good Stuff, whether we call it Spirit, Light, God, The Good, Nature or something else altogether.

We will sit in the round. The service will include music -- to listen to and to sing together -- contemplation, and laughter. If you would like, please bring something to share that takes YOU deep -- an object, a poem, a song. We will try to balance time for these sharings with time for a little meditation, too. We hope to provide child care.

July 19 – “Cleaning the Closet – Musings on Making Room” with Izzy Tappan-deFrees

I’ve spent a good deal of time in the closets at First Parish this year and made some interesting discoveries. What we store in our closets can be very revealing… I’ll share my thoughts on and new appreciation for clearing out cobwebs.

July 26 - “Tuning our Instruments, Centering from Soul” with Jeanne Cleary

Jeanne Cleary (Noor Allah) will guide folks through an experiential introduction to some Sufi meditations – not your usual “follow the breath in silence” mediations, but some sound practices and guided meditations from the mystical Sufi tradition designed to enhance attunement to the subtle. Come prepared to be open and to “play” with the vibrations of harmony all around and from within.

Aug 2 - "Where Is Heaven " with Marvin Hart (Kyle Hart’s Dad)

This topic discusses the philosophies of Christianity, Islam, Judaism and Buddhism's spirituality. For thousands of years cultures have sought after immortality while also exploring life after death in various forms. This talk is designed for you to process your own spirituality and how it fits into your life now, later and after death.
Guest speaker, Marvin Hart is a lay preacher in the St. Thomas St. John Virgin Islands Unitarian Fellowship. He is a retired executive who enjoys researching controversial topics for stimulating discussions.

Carole will share her multimedia show focusing on the Charles River treasures along Charles River Road, and Kathy will share her fabric creations, also inspired by the natural world. Does the color, beauty, and wonder of natural creatures inspire you? The service will be held in the cool and darkened social hall downstairs to enable viewing of projected images, accompanied by music, both worshipful and whimsical!
