Giving Box for March - Renewal House

The Giving Box for March will be collecting items for Renewal House in Roxbury, a shelter-based program which works with victims of all ages of domestic violence. Services range from hot line responses through shelter living with empowerment and healing offered to residents.

The Director of Renewal House has asked that we focus on collecting toiletries and cleaning supplies. The toiletries can include anything which a woman who has fled her home to shelter with nothing at all (except perhaps her children) might need to get through the day and night. Please use your imagination in processing what that might be like.

Some suggestions:
Soap//Hand Lotion//Tooth brushes//tooth paste//Deodorant//Hair care products//Razors//Shaving cream, Kotex Tampax//Toiletpaper/Lipstick//Colognes//etc.

Cleaning supplies help within the shelter itself on a daily basis and also help women start up housekeeping again as they transition to safe apartment living.

Some suggestions:Liquid Dish-washing soap//Papertowels/ Sponges/Mops/Bleach// Clothes washing detergents//etc.

The Director asked us to consider one more possible item that the shelter needs. Renewal House needs a vacuum cleaner. Should anyone here are FPW have a vacuum cleaner that is in excellent working order but needs a new purposeful home; please let us know.

Benefit Concert on Saturday, April 18 at 8:00 p.m. with "New Rigged Ship"

Our annual benefit concert cosponsored with the Folk Song Society of Greater Boston will be on Sat., Apr. 18, 8 pm
It features a Scottish concert
with cellist Reinmar Seidler and pianist Jacqueline Schwab (“New Rigged Ship”)
Place: First Parish in Watertown, 35 Church St., Watertown, MA 02472 (in
Watertown Square)
Admission: $20 (at the door)
Proceeds: to benefit Pediatric AIDS Treatment Support in China
Information: fssgb.org or (617) 924-6143

“New Rigged Ship” performs traditional Scottish fiddle tunes “without
a fiddle”—toe-tapping jigs, reels and strathspeys, and soul-searing
airs. With this unusual instrumentation, they bring a new sound to the music,
swapping the roles of lead and accompaniment back and forth. Some of the
tunes are quite athletic on cello! Reinmar also shares some tales from the
Shetlands. Reinmar frequently performs with the Handel and Haydn orchestra
in Boston and other period-instrument ensembles around the world, and he
also has performed Turkish music, tango, Renaissance dance music and
contemporary classical music. He has been heard on a number of Ken Burns’
documentaries with Jacqueline, including Ken’s recently premiered documentary
“The War.” Our “New Rigged Ship” duo has emerged in the last few
years, and they have performed so far in Oregon, Oklahoma, Illinois,
Pennsylvania, New York and the Boston area. Last summer, they recorded an
hour-long performance for WGBH radio, which they hope will air this spring.
Boston Globe Critic Scott Alarik wrote: “Their sound exists where art
music and tradition intermingle; their treatments of Scottish fiddle tunes
are both elegant and complex, emotionally raw-boned and rippling with
compositional intelligence.” You can hear sound clips from our demo, on
